October Game Releases
Every time I think I might finally make progress on my gaming backlog, another release calendar shows up and laughs at me.
October is looking like one of those months. There’s a lot of Mature-rated games coming out this month so parents, make sure you’re keeping an eye on those ESRB raitings.
Game Informer’s October lineup packs in major franchises, horror games, role-playing adventures, family gaming options, and plenty of familiar titles making their way to new platforms. Whether you play on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, or Switch 2, there’s a good chance something here will tempt you away from whatever you’re currently trying to finish.
And seriously, when are we supposed to play all of this?
The month gets moving immediately. October 1 brings Dynasty Warriors 3 Complete Edition Remastered, End of Abyss, and Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition, alongside Switch 2 releases for Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve follows on October 2.
That’s already enough to fill a few weekends. We haven’t even made it through the first week.
One of the biggest dates to circle is October 6, when Gears of War: E-Day arrives on Xbox Series X/S and PC. Its return to the series’ origins makes it an especially interesting release for longtime fans. Xbox also lists it as a launch-day addition to Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, which could make squeezing another game into the budget a little easier.
That same day, Star Wars: Galactic Racer lands on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Put Gears and Star Wars on the same release date, and suddenly choosing what to play becomes its own challenge.
October also understands the assignment when it comes to Halloween.
Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival is listed for October 8, followed by Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse on October 15. Switch 2 players get Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition on October 16, while Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy arrives on October 27.
There’s something fitting about spending October with a controller in your hands, the lights turned down, and immediate regret about turning those lights down.
For players who would rather spend their evenings on a lengthy adventure, the calendar has plenty of temptation. October 8 is particularly crowded with Kingdom Hearts releases, including Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] and several individual collections and editions. Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen follows on October 9, with Tales of Eternia Remastered arriving October 15.
These are the kinds of releases that make “I’ll just play for an hour” sound wildly optimistic.
There’s also plenty to catch the attention of households where gaming means passing controllers around or finding something everyone wants to try. The list includes Just Dance: Decades of Hits on October 13, then Bluey’s Happy Snaps, The Jackbox Party Pack 12, Toy Story 3 Complete Edition, and Toy Story: Retro Roundup! on October 15.
As someone who appreciates gaming’s ability to bring people together, I like seeing that variety. Sometimes the best gaming night is simply getting everyone in the room laughing at the same screen. Families should still check the individual games’ ratings and content, especially when choosing party games for younger players.
Switch 2 owners have a particularly busy month ahead. Beyond the releases already mentioned, the schedule includes Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed on October 6, House Flipper 2 and It Takes Two on October 15, Lego Harry Potter Collection on October 16, and Minecraft on October 27.
Some of these are new opportunities to play existing games on different hardware. That distinction matters, especially if you already own them elsewhere. For someone discovering them for the first time, though, there’s a substantial menu to choose from.
The final stretch brings more heavyweight names. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is listed for October 23, while Phantom Blade Zero arrives on October 29 for PS5 and PC. The latter’s combination of martial arts action and Wuxia storytelling makes it one to watch for players looking for a stylish action adventure.
But I wouldn’t let the familiar franchises take up the entire wish list. Names like Echo Weaver, The Witch’s Bakery, Over the Hill, Danchi Days, and Usual June are good reminders to spend a little time exploring beyond the biggest logos. A crowded release month is also a chance to discover something you weren’t already following.
My advice? Pick a couple of priorities, watch some gameplay, and leave yourself room to actually enjoy what you buy. The backlog will survive another month without becoming a second job.
